The name: Nigeria by Jennifer Duere

A group known as The Socio-Cultural Groups in Nigeria went to the President with a proposal for a name change from Nigeria to the People's Republic of Africa. Part of their claim is that as long as the name is not changed her problems will continue.
The title by which any person or thing is know or designated is said to be their name. A distinctive specific appellation, whether of an individual or class. Name calling dated back to the time of creation, when God asked Adam to give the animals a name and it was record that whatever Adam called them that was their name (Gen. 11:19, KJV).
The name Nigeria was given by Mrs. Lord Luggard. The fact that the name was gotten from the river was one the reason given for the advocacy for a new name. Those advocating for a name change, believe that the name is affecting the nation adversely. They argued that, a name is a dis riptide or qualifying appellation given to a person or thing, sometimes on account of character or acts. Therefore, if a name is sometimes given on account of character or acts of a person or thing, then we can safely say the name Nigeria may have been gotten on one or both of these accounts.
Though, some are of the opinion that the name change will not provide basic amenities for the people. They believe that bad and corrupt leaders are the cause of the problems of the country and not the name. Those against the name change further asked these questions, "of what benefit will the change of name get Nigeria? Will it provide jobs much more than the population that seeks it? Will it stabilise power supply in the country? Will it boost mobile networks in the country or compel network operators to either work or pack up and go? Will it make any government official that steal public funds go to jail? Will it force the government to fix damaged roads within the country or provide more alternative route for rural dwellers? Will it boost agricultural production in the country to increase export of other products and reduce our dependence on crude oil?" To these and many other questions they gave an emphatic "NO".
One of those who is against the name change is Mr. Taylor Takura, the Editor, 103.1 Unilag FM, and he had this to say about it. Enjoy.
