My visit to 103.1 Unilag FM by Jennifer Duere

My visit to 103.1 Unilag FM was indeed a success to say the least. Contrary to what we were made to believe, getting into the state was easier than hot knife through butter and getting the information I needed for my assignment was easier. I guess I am simple blessed.
Me with OAP, Babatunde Agbaosi A.k.A Agba
When I got the station and stated my mission, I was immediately ushered into the office of the Editor, who had just taken time off his annual leave to pick up some from his office. A Journalist repute, with a least three decades of journalism to his credit. He has been the editor since the inception in 2004.
Me and Mr. Tayo Takura, the Editor, Unilag FM
Mr. Takura spoke about the struggle for a license by the founding father of the state, then in 2004, the license was granted. Making 103.1 Unilag FM the first campus radio. He further stated that, the station is like a laboratory not just for the mass communication students but also for Engineering, maths/statistics, Accounting, drama students etc as well. The university serves also students from the satellite campus and not just the university community, he said.

He said, the station is funded basically by the University that pays staff salary, and equipment are supplied by UNESCO, World Bank etc.

"We are professionals working here, by the grace of God, I have been a journalist for about 30yrs, there is no area of the professional I have not worked", he concluded.
After his office I was shown around the facility.

It's the devil-Bishop by Jennifer Duere

Wonders, they say, shall never end! Was what everyone of Bishop Chibuike Nwabueze's acquaintances had to say when they heard his story.
They could not believe it when it filtered to their hearing that the 'man of God' had raped a 15year old girl, but unfortunately it was the bishop himself who started the story when he spoke to journalists at

Bishop Nwabueze talking to Journalists
the State Criminal Investigstion Department(SCID), Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Bishop nwabueze narrated how he was 'set up' by another Bishop. " We have different colleges of Bishops. I am the chairman of the communion of Bishops in Rivers State. Well what actually happened was a set up. It was set up by my enemies. I have so many people who are my enemies. The man in- charge of where I went to minister is my enemy , he is the person that set me up", he stated.
"He invited me to his church for a programme, claiming to be my friend. After the programme, he set me up because of the tussle over the chairmanship of the communion".
According to him, after he finished ministering, he retired to rest. The girl later came for deliverance. He said that while he was pleading the blood of Jesus on the little girl, she started removing her dress. Before he could restrain her, he said he found himself on top of her. He further stated that, when he realised he had sinned against God, he called some juniors pastors to tell them what he had done to pray for him. He said, he look a second look at the little girl who probably was still lying nude and waiting for a second round, he was angry at what he saw.
She was laughing at him and she asked him if he was angry and told him not to bother.
"But to my greatest surprise, I was surprised when I saw her pulling off her blouse and skirt. But before I knew it, I had a carnal knowledge of her. That is the truth of the matter".
After the confession his head dropped suddenly, then went up again, this time he said "anybody could have fallen for it".
He blamed it on the devil and his host, the bishop of Calvary Army Ministry, Rumuoji, Eneka in Obio Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The name: Nigeria by Jennifer Duere

A group known as The Socio-Cultural Groups in Nigeria went to the President with a proposal for a name change from Nigeria to the People's Republic of Africa. Part of their claim is that as long as the name is not changed her problems will continue.
The title by which any person or thing is know or designated is said to be their name. A distinctive specific appellation, whether of an individual or class. Name calling dated back to the time of creation, when God asked Adam to give the animals a name and it was record that whatever Adam called them that was their name (Gen. 11:19, KJV).
The name Nigeria was given by Mrs. Lord Luggard. The fact that the name was gotten from the river was one the reason given for the advocacy for a new name. Those advocating for a name change, believe that the name is affecting the nation adversely. They argued that, a name is a dis riptide or qualifying appellation given to a person or thing, sometimes on account of character or acts. Therefore, if a name is sometimes given on account of character or acts of a person or thing, then we can safely say the name Nigeria may have been gotten on one or both of these accounts.
Though, some are of the opinion that the name change will not provide basic amenities for the people. They believe that bad and corrupt leaders are the cause of the problems of the country and not the name. Those against the name change further asked these questions, "of what benefit will the change of name get Nigeria? Will it provide jobs much more than the population that seeks it? Will it stabilise power supply in the country? Will it boost mobile networks in the country or compel network operators to either work or pack up and go? Will it make any government official that steal public funds go to jail? Will it force the government to fix damaged roads within the country or provide more alternative route for rural dwellers? Will it boost agricultural production in the country to increase export of other products and reduce our dependence on crude oil?" To these and many other questions they gave an emphatic "NO".
One of those who is against the name change is Mr. Taylor Takura, the Editor, 103.1 Unilag FM, and he had this to say about it. Enjoy.
